For years one of the staple stories about Chinese gold was that “most of it comes through Hong Kong.” December shipping figures released by the Swiss show that’s no longer the case. Apparently, as part of their continuing modernification (words coined and juleps minted while you wait!), China no longer sees a need to bring gold through Hong Kong first. This article by our friends at Sharps Pixley shows where gold leaving Switzerland was heading in December. Note the US at a paltry 2.4 tonnes, while 154.1 tonnes were heading for China.
