Hungary: Orban calls for tougher borders as he takes office

BUDPAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has taken office for a third straight term and used the moment to call for beefed-up borders to cope with migrants.

Orban said Friday the country needs to “strengthen” its defenses to cope with “tens of millions” of migrants moving to Western Europe.

Orban took office after his Fidesz party, in conjunction with a small ally, won a landslide victory in elections last month. The alliance controls 133 of Parliament’s 199 seats, a majority that gives allows it to amend the constitution unchallenged.

Orban also claimed that “Europe’s economic center of gravity” was moving eastward. He said that in 1990 “Europe was our future, and now we are Europe’s future”

Critics say Orban is running an increasingly autocratic government since coming to power in 2010.
