SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says he has been endorsed by seven black lawmakers in the critical early voting state of South Carolina.
Sanders’ 2020 campaign made the announcement Thursday before a Spartanburg town hall meeting with members of the state’s Legislative Black Caucus. The supporters include state Reps. Terry Alexander and Justin Bamberg, both of whom served as top national surrogates for Sanders in 2016.
The support is part of Sanders’ attempt to turn things around in South Carolina, which handed him a drubbing in 2016 and blunted his presidential campaign’s momentum.
For months, the senator from Vermont has been working to deepen his ties with black voters, who comprise most of the Democratic primary electorate in South Carolina, home of the first primary in the South.
